My Handmade Vacation Travel Goodies!

As promised, here are a few shots of the handmade goodies I took to the beach this year!

2014-07-24 15.24.22Because this year I traveled alone with the boys, I needed a larger carry-on for my goodies as well as travel/boy/emergency supplies (meaning snacks).  I chose to make the Aeroplane Bag by Sara Lawson/Sew Sweetness.  I have tested a ton of her patterns and have made almost all of them at some point except this one. It has the shape and size I was looking for and turned out perfect for me.

2014-07-24 15.26.41One rule I gave myself was to use materials I had on hand to make my travel goodies. NO fabric shopping! So for the Aeroplane Bag I went into my scrap bins and was able to find 1 1/2″ cotton webbing for straps, linen for the base and a light blue distressed polka dot fabric for the interior.  My exterior were large panels of Tula Pink’s Saltwater Line I had already made by large strip piecing. All I didwas to quilt it over the interfacing and trim it to fit the pattern. Easy-Peasy!

You can tell just how roomy this bag is by all I can fit in it!  I was able to fit my cell phone, iPad, a drink/snacks, wallet, book, and a charger in addition to the the quilted folder you see above.  I blogged about that little pretty HERE. I put our travel and car rental plans in the folder as well as a magazine and my iPad. I also put 4 pockets in the interior of my Aeroplane Bag for quick reach items.

2014-07-24 15.25.35The last item I made was a slightly modified version of Ayumi’s (Pink Penguin) Lunch Bag Tutorial. I found Ayumi’s blog shortly after I started sewing again and this was the first accessory I made. For my version I used simple linen exterior with Trefle by KOKKA for the interior.  Such a soft fabric with the cutest little Tinkerbells – as my 7yo called them!  I put my hexie kit inside here along with some linen to practice embroidery stitches and sashiko. The top of this bag does have a drawstring, but I fold it over the exterior when it’s in use, like you see above.

Well, there you have it.  My vacation travel set.  So comfortable to use on my trip and as a bonus it fit under the seat for easy access with no problems. Win-Win all around!  Cindy
