Summer up here is now in full swing and we have been enjoying the past 3 weeks off school. The boys got out on the 26th of June and on that day I realized I now have a 3rd, 6th, and 9th grader….one in each school!! I’ve never been too teary or emotional over the boys and their school advancements, but let me tell you I’ve been having a rough time realizing my eldest baby will start high school in a few short months!!
So while there are a lot of changes going on in the house this summer, I hope to share some of these adventures here with you.
My dad was able to come up and spend the first week of summer break with us and we loved every minute. We explored the area, went to a new-to-us park and our big adventure was a trip to Niagara Falls!
The weather was perfect and in the 70’s. It’s a few hours away, so we left early and came back late. I think when we go again we’ll head to the Canadian side as that’s where the big hotels, restaurants and Great Wolf Lodge are. You can easily make an overnight or two day trip of it.
I’m trying to post the best pictures I took during our trip, but when you actually get up close to the falls words and images just don’t do it justice. It is mother nature at her finest. You just want to stand and look forever.
The first thing we did was take the Maid of the Mist boat tour. They give you blue ponchos (Canadian side gets red) because with all the mist and wind down there you get wet. Really wet. And it’s cold!! But this is the boat that takes you right up close to the falls. There is a nice automated story that goes along with the ride that gives you more history as well.
Once you get off the ride there are a steep set of stairs you can take that follow along one of the falls. We went about 1/2 way up. There is also another attraction you can go to that takes you below the falls. You wear ponchos and special foam slippers through the tour. We didn’t have time to do this one, but will next time.
While we were there the town lawn/maintenance crew were on the grounds clearing weeds and mowing. The gear they had to wear to keep them safe around the falls had to weigh a ton! Anyone up for a job like that?! Not for the faint of heart.
Yes, it literally just drops off the edge…
By the end of the day our feet had walked a few miles so we hopped on a Trolly for a ride that took us around the whole park. It was the perfect ending to a great day of a new adventure for 3 generations of my family!
If you have not had the chance to visit Niagara Falls before (on either US or Canadian side) you really should.
